Accessibility Statement
What we have done to make this website usable for everyone, what still needs work, and how to tell us when we get it wrong.

Our Commitment
We want this website to be usable by as many people as possible, including visitors who use screen readers, navigate by keyboard, or need larger text and stronger contrast.
This site has an accessibility button in the bottom-left corner. It lets you enlarge the text, switch to higher contrast, underline every link, and turn off motion. Your choices are remembered on your device.
Those are our own controls, not a third-party accessibility overlay. Overlay products are widely criticised by disabled users and by the National Federation of the Blind because they inject a second accessibility layer that fights the screen reader or magnifier you already use. Ours simply change the page’s own styling, and the site is built to be usable with the button switched off entirely.
Standard We Aim For
We are working to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. The site is tested against automated accessibility checks and currently passes them with no reported failures. Automated testing catches only part of the picture, so the list below is honest about what we know.
What We Have Done
Every image carries descriptive alternative text, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
Text and background colours meet the WCAG AA contrast ratio for their size.
Headings run in a correct, unskipped order so screen reader users can navigate by structure.
A “Skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard user reaches on every page, and there is a single main landmark per page.
The accessibility button and its panel are fully keyboard operable, report their state to screen readers, and can be dismissed with Escape.
The site is fully keyboard navigable, focus is always visible, and animation is reduced automatically for visitors whose system requests it.
The layout reflows down to small screens without horizontal scrolling, and tap targets meet the minimum size.
Known Limitations
Background videos on the site are silent, decorative b-roll carrying no spoken content, so they have no captions. If we publish video with speech or meaningful audio, we will caption it.
The embedded Google Map on our Visit page is a third-party component whose accessibility we do not control. Our full address and phone number are always given as text next to it, so you never need the map to find or contact us.
For questions about step-free access, parking, seating or other physical access at the museum itself, please call us on (843) 499‑9008 and we will tell you exactly what to expect before you travel.
Tell Us When Something Is Wrong
If any part of this site blocks you, we want to hear about it. Email [email protected] or call (843) 499‑9008 and describe what you were trying to do. We will reply and tell you what we intend to do about it.
